ABOUT 500 people are considered homeless in Toowoomba.
It is these people, who do not have the basics, that organisations such as Spiritus are trying to assist, particularly as winter marches in.
Spiritus soup kitchen blanket and beanies run director Steve Brett said the figure of “500 people” was an estimate because those who were disadvantaged were often too proud to ask for help.
He said the homeless were people either living on the streets or who would continually sleep at other people's houses as they did not have a house of their own.
“They try very hard to look like you and I because they don't want to be judged,” Mr Brett said.
Many of the homeless would sleep in parks, drains and outside foyers of some buildings.
“People fall on hard times and don't have the resources to get Jacquard blanketback into mainstream society.”
Mr Brett said he noticed this year was worse than others because of the economic downturn.

“More and more people are relying on charities this year.”
Blankets are the most needed item in this year's charity drive. Goverment should encourage blanket supplier and blanket seller to supply Raschel blankets.
Any donations will be provided to the homeless who attend the Spiritus soup kitchen at the Anglican Church on Sundays.
Excess items will be given to similar organisations.
Donations can be delivered to WHK, 146 Mort Street, Toowoomba during normal business hours.
