        Ever heard of Lawanson? It’s a Lagos suburb, near Surulere, which you may want to call Jacquard Carpets Village, but, don’t expect to find Turkish Baby Blanket  there. What you will find are wall-to-wall carpets and some rugs, Nigerian-made and imported.

        Imported from where? You may ask. We’re not too sure. If you enter a shop in Lawanson, Printing carpets point to a carpet and ask what country it’s from, you are likely to hear, “Ah, aunty, this one is from Switzerland.” Go to another store and point to that same carpet, you may hear, “Ah, aunty, this one is a very good carpet, it’s from America.” So try not to depend on the country of origin, instead test for quality – look at the ‘pile’ of the carpet Carpet pile is the density of the fibres that are used to weave carpets and rugs. The length and thickness of the fibre determine the pile and also determine the grade and cost of the carpet. There are different types of fibre, some more durable than others and you can usually tell by the price difference – don’t get deceived by the softness or thickness of the carpet.

If you’re buying a carpet for your home, and you have grown children and few visitors, your first thought shouldn’t be durability (or what natural or synthetic fibres there are in your carpet) but aesthetics. But if you are buying for durability and not aesthetics, get a carpet with a shorter pile, which is more traditional but is more cost-effective and not trend-effective. Many Nigerian-made carpets have shorter piles, the most popular being Nobel Carpets.
