Creating a hand-woven rug is a complicated task, requiring a variety of distinct skills and techniques. Needless to say, the process is both labor intensive and time consuming.First, the raw wool must be washed, carded, and spun into yarn. The yarns are then carefully dyed. The range and subtlety of the yarn colors, and their interplay in a given design, are obviously crucial to the appeal and unique character of the finished rug. Along with the actual weaving and execution of a chosen pattern, the dyeing process is traditionally entrusted only to the most skillful craftsmen.

From the dawn of rug making until relatively recent times, the only available dyes were derived from animal and vegetal sources. While often quite vibrant initially, some of these dyes were inclined to fade over time. In many cases, this effect would enhance the harmony of the color palette and a soft vintage quality to the rug. Some natural dyes, however, could weaken the wool fiber and result in uneven patterns of wear and color intensity over time.Beginning in the 19th century, chemical formulation began to replace natural dyes in commercial usage. Chemical dyes gave the weaver a vast and infinitely varied color palette, from the richest and deepest jewel tones to the most delicate and subtle pastels. Equally important, chemical dyes are more fade resistant and will not compromise the fibers of the yarns.

Once the yarns for a rug are spun and dyed, the loom is prepared for the weaving process. Historically, nomadic tribes used horizontal looms which rest on the ground or, occasionally, transportable vertical looms. Today, most quality rugs are made for export are woven on large “roller beam” looms. Whatever types of loom is used, the basic principles of rug weaving remain essentially the same. The vertical warp threads are tied between the loom’s upper and lower beams, and define the rug’s length. The horizontal weft threads are woven between the alternating warps across the rug, and define the rug’s width. In a knotted oriental rug, tiny threads (wool) are tied onto the warp, creating the pattern or design. The weft threads anchor and align the rows of knots. When the knots are later cut, they stand away from the warp and weft backing to create the velvety pile of finished piece.

The black wool Blanket works best for high traffic areas like the living room, as wool is a great natural material that is tough and hard-wearing, yet remains very soft and comfortable for the feet. Wool is also a natural fiber which means that it is safer than synthetic materials. Did you know that wool is naturally flame resistant? This makes it a great Blanket to be placed in living rooms with fireplaces. A small errant spark that may accidentally land on your wool Blanket will burn itself out.For this wool Blanket, you can easily take your pick from the many available shapes and sizes. A rectangular one looks great and so will a round one. Most people go for the 8′ x 10′ sized ones but this depends on the amount of space that you have. Design wise, you can have a traditional design or a contemporary design. Pick a solid black one or better yet pick a dominantly black Blanket with other complementary colors. You can easily find black and white styles, black and red wool Blankets, black and grey contemporary Blankets, or even black and brown Blankets.

The black shag Blankets can offer a different and fun texture to your home. Shags come in many styles, and you can pick a shag made from natural fibers or synthetic materials. The most expensive type of shag Blankets that you can use in the home is the Flokati shag. In black, these add a very soft and comfortable surface for you to step on while giving your room a classy luxurious look that you will definitely love. Besides the Flokati, you may want to try a black shaggy Aros Blanket, black leather shag Blanket, cotton jersey shag Blanket or even a black synthetic acrylic shag Blanket.

The black sheepskin Blankets make a nice addition to any room in the home. Sheepskin today can be found in many hues and black is one of them. A sheepskin Blanket is either made from real sheepskin or you can find them made from synthetic fibers as well. So you can take your pick based on your personal preferences. You can use these Blanket sin the living room or other areas of the home. Some of these Blankets come in the natural shape of sheepskin Blankets that you may have seen, while others like the synthetic sheepskin Blankets are found in several sizes in the rectangular and round shapes.

The black silk Blankets are one of the more expensive types of Blankets for sale. This is because the material used is silk, which is a luxurious material. On the other hand, you can now find faux silk Blankets if you so prefer. These are much cheaper than the real thing. Black silk area Blankets normally can be found in oriental or Persian designs. These real silk Blankets may not be suitable for high traffic areas, unless you opt for a faux silk area Blanket.

Alphabet Mats – These are available with uppercase letters, lowercase letters, combination of both, and with images and letters. An alphabet Mat will aid in letter recognition and phonics. Children’s Mats with letters and images aid in letter association with a word — for example, the letter “A” and a picture of an apple. Teachers can use an alphabet carpet to teach preschool and elementary school students the alphabet and reading. Learning this way is more fun and exciting than learning from sentence strips!

Number Mats – With a number Mat children will learn to recognize the numbers and learn to count. Some children’s Mats come with both the alphabet and numbers. Teach children by having them walk to and stand on the number that is called out. Some carpets even come with simple math equations so that a teacher can start introducing children to math.

Seating Mats – Seating classroom carpets usually come with colored squares or circles arranged in a grid or pattern and are designed to seat a certain number of children. Depending on your classroom size you can expect to seat up to 20 to 30 kids on one classroom carpet. The larger the carpet the more children you can seat. Seating Mats are great for circle time sharing or story time reading. A seating Mat organizes the children in the classroom which translates into a calmer more peaceful atmosphere. Both teachers and librarians will love these Mats!

Shape and Color Mats – Teach geometric shapes and color recognition. Elements of this theme of Mats is often found in some of the other classroom carpet types, but if you need to teach color and what a square, circle, triangle, oval, hexagon, etc. look like then pick one of these kids Mats.

Faith Based Mats – A faith based Mat usually includes elements of the above carpets, but also includes a religious teaching. If you teach in a Catholic school, Christian school, Jewish school, or church you will find a large selection of religious Mats to choose.

Bilingual Mats – Today more than ever teaching another language is so important as different cultures come together. A bilingual Mat in Spanish and English or French and English are available to teach either ESL kids English or English speaking children Spanish or French. Look for bilingual Mats that teach numbers, letters, colors, shapes, and word association. Some bilingual Mats teach several of these on the same carpet. What a fun way to learn another language & teach cultural diversity!

Map Mats – Whether you are teaching geography or social studies a map Mat is a great teacher’s aid. Look for carpets that include all 50 U.S. States or a world Mat that includes all the continents and their names. With a map Mat children will learn U.S and world geography in a snap!

Play Mats – When rainy days occur or kids need to be inside look to a play Mat as a fun alternative. Although some play Mats can even be used outsides. Hopscotch Mats are a fun activity that most all kids will love. Also, road Mats that have city streets can be used for playing with toy cars and such. These carpets help kids learn fine motor skills, coordination, and balance.

Carpet Squares – Carpet squares and rounds can be found to be used with many of the Mats mentioned above. These usually are made in 12 inch squares or rounds with letters, numbers, shapes, animals, bilingual, phonics, etc. — great for matching and playing games!

As teachers look for new, exciting, and fun ways to grab the attention of children and inspire them to learn, one option is to include classroom Mats as a teaching aide. There are many shapes, sizes, colors, and themes on the market that early childhood and elementary teachers, daycare centers, and churches can find that will fit their needs.

The biggest and best plush NFL blanket is the “Diamond Plate” series, named for the cool diamond plate pattern in the background with your favorite teams logo printed in brilliant authentic team pantone colors. These blankets are a huge “60 x 80″ size and will keep even the largest sports fan warm and cozy on the couch this football season. The cost of the Diamond Plate blankets ranges from $45 – $50.

Now, for the different types and styles of “Tapestry” blankets. The main difference in the plush blankets and the tapestries, is that the tapestry throws are woven and can be used for much more than just a blanket. The tapestry throws are extremely popular, they look great hanging over a couch or chair, or used as a wall hanging or a throw rug, or any other type of room accent. Tapestries are amazingly colorful, and extremely detailed. There are 2 types of tapestries ~ Woven Tapestries, and Triple Woven Jacquard Throws.

The Woven tapestries usually commemorate special events, when there is a new World Series Champion, or college football champion, you will find a special edition tapestry the next day, when there is a new Super Bowl Champ, of course you can get a special collectible tapestry all over the internet. The woven tapestries are amazingly detailed and colorful, they are 48 by 60 inches, and are fringed on all 4 sides woven tapestries are available in every NFL team in what is called the “Home Field Advantage” series. They are a beautifully crafted piece of artwork. Every tapestry is slightly different in style, there is the team name with the officially licensed logo and colors and a picture of the teams helmet, in the background, there is artwork relative to the city ~ like dolphins jumping out of the ocean and pictures of palm trees for the Miami Dolphins, there are also “Player Tapestries” Basically a woven tapestry with an image of your favorite football player, currently, the are 17 NFL players available.

The final series of NFL team tapestries, is the “Specialty Series” basically these are collectible items commemorating memorable events in the NFL. There are tapestries for every Super Bowl winning team, along with the official logo of the Super Bowl in which they won. There are also special limited edition tapestries produced in a very small quantity. The examples of these are the now famous “Helmet Catch” by David Tyree of the New York Giants in Super Bowl 42. The artisans at Northwest’s factory actually produced a blanket with a picture of David Tyree with the football pinned to his helmet as he is getting mugged by The New England Patriots defender Rodney Harrison. There is also a Dallas Cowboys last season in Texas Stadium tapestry with an image of the famous stadium with the hole in the roof printed right on the blanket, this is the Cowboys last season in Texas Stadium before moving to their new digs next year.

If you are really serious about preventing your rug from getting damaged, you could even consider buying rug-pads in order to ensure that you keep the bottom of your rug from getting torn.

How do you compare the thickness of moving Carpets?

The thickness of the Carpet generally represented by the Weight per Carpet. Some manufacturers use Amount of filler in Oz per yard. This is quite confusing and I will get in more details in further articles or you can go to our site and read more.
Imported moving Carpets are usually compressed before they shipped so they look thin. But after use they absorb an air and will get thicker – it’s like pumping up a pillow)

What type of filler is used?

Carpet for moving filled with recycled cotton. Recycled cotton is not a “Pure cotton” as some distributors may tell you. It may contain all kind of fiber including synthetic, etc.

What is the difference in durability of the moving Carpet?

The Carpet weight or thickness of the Carpet is a factor of protection of your furniture. The durability of the Carpet will be determined by the outer fabric and the binding that is used to manufacture a moving Carpet. There are theree major types of fabric that are used in the industry. Nonwoven fabric is man-made material that looks like it’s a pressed fabric. You will see no woven threads. This type of material is cheap and usually “Economy ” Carpets are made with this outer fabric. Polyester and Terylene are exactly the same material. (See our site for more details why they have different name). Polyester is very durable and abrasive resistant material – very soft and smooth. Polyester is mildew resistant very easy to wash and dry. Moving Carpets with Polyester outer fabric look shiny and “slippery”. cotton is more expensive material to use. Carpets with cotton outer fabric do not look shiny. They are not Slippery. They feel more … natural. some moving Carpets are manufactured with variety of used fabric, which can be mixed in unpredictable combination. manufacturer would use whatever was available. These Carpets sometimes can be very rough, not flexible and can be hard in cold weather.

Flokati rugs are traditional rugs, classic rugs, contemporary rugs, transitional rugs and modern rugs. Flokati rugs are great for photography, also great for photos, photo shoots, film and advertising. Flokati is a hand crafted wool shag rug that is made from the finest wool for elegance, comfort and durability. Flokati rugs originated in the Greek mountains and have a natural, soft and cozy appeal. Whether you’re looking to decorate your teenager’s bedroom or add a touch of luxury to your fireplace area with a plush Flokati area rug, you’ll discover an abundant supply of appealing decorative area rugs. Shag rugs, also called Flokati rugs, are very popular due their varying thickness and wool rugs provide a natural style. Flokati rugs offer substance for photo shoots and are a valuable commodity in today’s world of photography.

Finding outdoor rugs and mats for the patio, gazebo, deck and any other exterior areas is a treat. Outdoor rugs are available in almost as many styles as rugs for the homes interior. Outdoor polypropylene rugs can help you design your outdoor area at a very affordable cost. Outdoor rug runners are specifically designed to fit many hallway widths. The quality of outdoor rugs make them a go-anywhere solution. Match the rug with your outdoor furniture’s look and feel, but don’t pick something that’s too loud as it might distract the eye from admiring your layout. Round outdoor rugs are great for an outdoor room that has seating and other kinds of furniture. What is great about a polypropylene outdoor rug is that you can wash time and time again without damaging the rug itself. There is nothing more welcoming than an indoor outdoor rug that greets you and your visitors at the entrance of your home. A door mat is certainly fine, but why not try a reversible and waterproof outdoor rug that will cover more area and look more pleasing.

Runner Rugs are perfect for hallways, stairways and doorways. You may decide to brighten up your otherwise dark hallway with a rug runner or cover and charm your slippery staircase. They can help reduce the risk of injury on slippery stairways or wet floors. These rugs are great under dining room tables, at entrance ways, or anywhere with lots of traffic like hallways and stairs. The purpose of carpet stair treads is to protect your stairs from wear and tear and damage in the form of scratching and chipping, from normal every day use. Stair treads and stair runners are without a doubt one of the most important aspect of staircase safety. For runner rugs (rugs that are noticeably longer than they are wide and typically used in hallways and on staircases) and area rugs that aren’t surrounded by furniture, determine the border you would like to have around the rug; leaving about 18 to 36 inches between the rug and the wall creates an eye-pleasing border.

Weather. On a cold winter day, one will need a warmer (heavier) turnout rug than on a cool autumn or spring day. If there is wind, additional protection is required due to the wind chill factor. Likewise, if there is heavy rain, the insulation provided by the horse’s coat and by the rug are both reduced, unless they have a rain resistant cover.

Health and Age. Horses which are young, strong and healthy have less requirement for a warming rug than ones which are not. On a cold day, it may make sense to put a heavy turnout rug on a sick or old horse, when a younger horse in the same field may be fine with a light turnout rug or no rug at all.

Thickness of coat. A horse with a thick coat will have less need for a rug than one which has a fine coat, or which has been clipped.

Exhibiting. A horse with a thick coat generally does not look as attractive (in the eyes of most people) as one which has a thinner coat. Consequently, horses being exhibited usually have a rug which is warm enough to discourage growth of their winter coat. Such coats are relatively heavy for the horse’s circumstances, as they need to replace the insulation provided by the natural winter coat rather than merely supplement it. Likewise, summer sheets and show rugs are for the needs of the exhibitor rather than the horse.

Number of rugs. The above factors will determine the number of rugs required. For example, a young and healthy horse in a mild climate may not require a rug at all and may be happier without one. In a colder climate, a healthy horse may need only a light rug to be used during the coldest days. An elderly or sick horse may need multiple rugs, depending on the situation (e.g. uninsulated waterproof coat for summer rain, lightweight turnout rug for autumn or spring, and a heavy turnout rug for winter).
Once one has decided on the type of rug plus (in the case of warming rugs) the required weight, one can then look at the materials, quality and features which you may require. Some common items and features to consider are:

Antibacterial. Some rugs are treated to be antibacterial.

Breathable. Breathable rugs allow sweat to evaporate and air to access the coat, features which make the rug more comfortable and healthier.

Coverage. Rugs generally cover the body. Some also have neck covers, either as part of the rug or an a detachable extra.

Friction points: Rugs can rub, especially if worn by active horses or when the horse is working. The main points affected are typically around the shoulders and chest. To prevent this, some rugs have anti-friction fabric at these points to allow the rug to easily slide and move without rubbing the coat.

Hooks, loops, buckles, straps and attachments. These should be strong, easily opened and closed, and firmly attached.

Insulation. The amount of insulation is typically expressed in grams per square meter. For example, a ’300g’ rug has 300 grams of insulation per square meter of rug. The actual rug will weigh more than this, as this is only the weight of the insulation itself and does not include the weight of fabric, straps or buckles. In general, the heavier the weight, the warmer the rug. However, this is not a precise measurement as there are different types of insulation, which vary in terms of quality and effectiveness.

Rain. A rug may be unsuitable for rain, or be rain resistant, or rain proof.

Tear Resistant or Rip Stop. Rugs may use fabrics or weaves which are resistant to tearing, and in the event of a tear resist the tear becoming larger.

Washing. Machine washable rugs are more convenient.

Wicking. Remove sweat and moisture from the coat.

The techniques of patching vary in accordance with the method that was used to install the carpet as well as its construction.Relieve some of the tension in the installed carpet by using a knee kicker or power stretcher. Stretch the carpet around the immediate area of the proposed patch toward its center, and stay nail around the affected area. Use long, thin stay nails placed about four inches apart.Regardless of the shape of the damaged area, run the blade of a screw driver between two rows of pile and define the outline of a rectangle or a square about six inches inside the lines of stay nails.
Using a razor blade knife; cut carefully between the spread rows to remove the damaged area without cutting through into the underlying padding. Avoid cutting across the shots, if at all possible, or the face yarns.

Use the removed piece of carpet as a template and cut a replacement piece. Duplicate the piece that was removed, exactly matching its size, pattern, direction of the pile, the number of shots or stitches and the number of pile rows.Cut four pieces of face-up seaming tape to fit tight against each other around the perimeter of the hole. Position the pieces of tape flat on the exposed padding with the center line of the tape following each cut edge of the carpet.Lift each carpet edge in turn, and apply seam cement on the exposed tape. Use a scrap piece of carpet to spread the cement evenly over the entire tape. Coat the cut edges of the carpet with the same cement, and then press the cut edges of the carpet down into full contact with the spread adhesive and the tape.

Force a thin awl through the center of the replacement piece of carpet, bend the edges of the piece downward, and carefully insert the patch into the prepared hole. Make certain each edge of the new piece is on the coated seaming tape, then press down on the center of the replacement with one hand and remove the awl with the other hand. The downward pressure in the center will push the edges of the patch outward into firm contact with the edges of the surrounding carpet. Some of the seam cement will transfer to the edge of the patch piece to seal its pile tufts in place.Press down the four sides of the patch firmly onto the adhesive coated tape. Then place a weight over the entire patched area to hold the carpet in firm contact with the adhesive and the tape. Allow the weight to remain until the adhesive cures, or a minimum of twenty-four hours. Then remove the stay nails from the carpet around the patched area. Brush the seams to erect any trapped pile tufts.
